Held in Bangkok, Thailand, 6th May 2019 in conjunction with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) 88th Annual Scientific Conference, 6 – 10 May 2019.
As President of IFSC I was delighted to be invited to attend the WHO Global Initiative for Emergency and Essential Surgical Care (GIEESC) 8th Biennial meeting which convened in Bangkok on Monday 6th May. This ran in conjunction with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) 88th Annual Scientific Conference which ran until Friday 10th May.
The meeting was very useful and provided an update on progress made towards achieving the goals set out in WHO Resolution WHA68.15 and focused on the Western Pacific and Southeast Asia member countries. Speakers from 15 different countries or professional societies highlighted the recent contributions to expanding surgical and anaesthesia care.
A panel discussion was held to discuss surgical indicators and data collection efforts within the Region.
I was particularly interested in the introduction of surgical training in the Pacific Island Nations and how they cope with difficulties of travel.
